You have done the hard part already.
The skills this work actually needs are the ones you were trained in. Here is everything we know, free, and where to start.
Why you, specifically.
The shortage in this field is not people who can explain a transformer. It is people who can make a system work inside an organization that has rules, paperwork, and staff who did not ask for any of this.
That is a coordination job. You have done it. The rest is tools, and tools take weeks.
Prometheus Consulting is an SBA-certified Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business. The material here is free with no signup, because the fastest way to find out whether this work suits you is to do some of it.
Five things you already do.
You already brief an objective
A warning order tells someone what has to be true at the end, what they have to work with, and what you will not accept. That is the same job as writing the instruction an AI agent works from. People who have never had to brief anyone write three vague sentences and then wonder why the output is vague.
You already work from a written procedure
And you know the difference between a procedure someone thought about and one that was copied. AI systems fail in production for the same reason units do: the steps were never written down, so nobody could tell when they were skipped.
You already run the review afterwards
An AAR names what failed and does not protect anybody. Most organizations cannot do this. It is the single hardest habit to install in a team, and you were taught it in your first year.
You already run a modular system
A squad is a module. It has a defined job, defined inputs, a leader who reports up, and it can be swapped without redesigning the platoon. Multi-agent AI systems are built the same way, and the failure modes are the same: unclear boundaries, no reporting, and one element quietly doing two jobs.
You already decide without complete information
Observe, orient, decide, act came out of the Air Force before it was a business slide. Designing an agent is deciding what it observes, what it is allowed to conclude, and when it has to stop and ask. You have run that loop under worse conditions than a deployment window.
Where to begin.
Take one task from your own week. Something you actually have to do, not a demo. Do it with an AI tool until it works properly, then do it again next week and see whether it still works. That second part is where most people stop and it is the part that matters.
The library is 440 guides, free, no paywall and no email needed to read any of it. Start with the fundamentals, then move to the agent material — that is where your experience stops being a nice line in a cover letter and starts being the reason you are better at this than the person next to you.
The field notes cover what happens when this meets a real organization, including the parts that go wrong.
If you are already running one.
Different problem, different material. These cover certification, contracting and compliance rather than career.
