iManage AI Features Review for AmLaw Firms

iManage sells document and email management to law firms and corporate legal departments. Its document management system, iManage Work, holds a firm's documents and emails, and the AI tools described below are built into it or connect to it. iManage says more than one million professionals at 4,000 organizations rely on it, and its May 2026 announcement said 79% of the Am Law 100 now rely on iManage.

What iManage's AI includes

Ask iManage is a generative AI assistant built into iManage Work. Since a January 2026 update, lawyers can ask natural-language questions across the iManage Work platform, and every answer includes citations that link back to the documents used. The product page lists:

• searching the repository and returning cited answers
• summaries of long documents
• pulling specific clauses verbatim and checking them against stated policies
• redline analysis of the changes between document versions
• structuring data into tables, such as judges and jurisdictions
• playbook analysis that applies the organization's accepted positions to each agreement

iManage says Ask iManage works within the firm's existing permissions, security standards and governance policies, and that content is not moved outside the iManage environment. The January update came at no additional cost to existing Ask iManage subscribers.

AI Enrichment classifies documents and extracts key metadata when they are filed. iManage says it supports more than 60 agreement subclasses, including NDAs and MSAs, extracts six structured entity types from agreements such as parties, jurisdiction and governing law, and can enrich the existing library as well as new files. It runs inside the customer's environment with processing in the customer's region (the US, UK, EU, Singapore, Canada or Australia), and it works in English only for now. iManage says it inherits existing permissions, ethical walls and Security Policy Manager policies, that no data leaves to train a shared model, and that admins control who sees enrichment fields in each library. The extracted fields feed search, Ask iManage and other AI tools.

The iManage MCP Server, announced in May 2026, connects iManage content to outside AI tools through the Model Context Protocol. iManage names Microsoft Copilot, Harvey, Legora, Thomson Reuters CoCounsel, Spellbook, ChatGPT Enterprise, Gemini Enterprise and Claude. It works in both directions: AI tools can read content and write work product back, including drafting documents, filing them in the right workspace and updating metadata. iManage says every access is authenticated, permission-bound and logged, that content is not copied into third-party AI data stores, and that administrators choose which tools and which users can write content back.

Insight+ is iManage's knowledge search and management product, used to curate, manage and find a firm's knowledge content. iManage's May 2026 platform announcement said the MCP server is available for Insight+.

What changed in 2026

• January. The Ask iManage update for questions across the platform with cited answers.
• May. The MCP Server, then a platform update at iManage's ConnectLive conference built around what iManage calls a context fabric. iManage said Security Policy Manager will support more granular client- and matter-level restrictions on AI use, and that Threat Manager now shows AI agent activity in user activity reports.
• August. iManage announced that its next-generation platform would reach general availability in October 2026. It said playbook-based review, tabular review across hundreds of documents and MCP read and write actions were already available, and that the MCP server was being extended to create workspaces and folders and to file, move and link documents.

What a firm needs to use it

iManage's AI page says its AI is available only on the iManage Cloud endpoint, and that Ask iManage, Mailbox Assistant and AI Services are not included in a standard cloud subscription and are bought as additional products. The page lists no prices.

That leaves three questions to settle before a demo:

1. Is the firm on iManage Cloud? A firm running iManage on its own servers should ask what moving to the cloud involves before planning around these features.
2. Which products does the license include? Ask for a quote that lists Ask iManage, AI Enrichment, the MCP server and Insight+ separately, and ask which of the August 2026 features each one covers.
3. Which outside AI tools will connect? If the firm uses Harvey, CoCounsel Legal or another assistant, decide whether it will read iManage content through the MCP server and whether it may write anything back.

Client data

iManage says that by default neither iManage nor its third-party model providers use customer data in iManage Cloud to train or retrain models, that any opt-in to share data is optional and disclosed at the time of use, that data uploaded to iManage Cloud is encrypted, and that iManage does not have access to the underlying content.

ABA Formal Opinion 512 says lawyers should read and understand a generative AI tool's terms of use and privacy policy before putting client information into it. Compare iManage's statements with the contract. For each AI tool connected through the MCP server, ask that vendor the same questions, since iManage itself tells customers to work with their AI vendors to understand what data leaves iManage through the connection.

A rollout plan

1. Start with one practice group's library. iManage says enrichment metadata improves search and supports Ask iManage and other AI tools. Run AI Enrichment on one library and have its knowledge lawyers check a sample of the extracted parties, jurisdictions and governing law.
2. Test Ask iManage on questions with known answers. Ask for a firm precedent, a clause from a closed deal, or the changes between two versions of an agreement, and check every citation.
3. Test the walls. Set up a test user who is walled off from one matter and confirm that Ask iManage and any MCP-connected tool return nothing from it.
4. Write the playbook before using playbook analysis. The firm's accepted positions and fallbacks have to be written down first.
5. Start outside tools on read-only access. Allow write-back through the MCP server for named users once the filing rules are set.

Formal Opinion 512 also says lawyers with managerial authority must set firm policy on permitted generative AI use and train lawyers and staff on it, with updates as the tools change. Write the policy before the pilot so the pilot tests it.

Where iManage fits with other legal AI

iManage positions its platform as the governed home for firm content, with research and drafting tools connecting to it. That makes the choice of iManage AI a decision about two things: what the firm wants to do inside the document management system with Ask iManage, and which outside assistants it wants reading from it.
